I Live On An Island... An Internet Activity to Create Geographical and Cultural Awareness for Students Living in Island Communities
Objectives:Sixth grade students at Waimalu Elementary School in Aiea, Hawaii compared and contrasted several geographical and social characteristics of life on the island of Oahu with that of students their age from Ireland and Great Britain. An exchange of email messages in combination with library and Internet resources provided the foundation for this understanding.
Several 4th, 5th, and 6th grade students from Waimalu had the opportunity to travel to these other islands during March and April of 1999. This excursion allowed these students and their parents to enjoy an actual comparison of our different island communities.
This tour was documented through the use of color print cameras, digital cameras and video. These images were shared with the sixth grade students who were unable to meet their keypals in person. Some of these images are available here for everyone to share.
