Lesson Two:

"Island Life"


Objectives:

  • Students will review emailing etiquette.
  • Students will learn to compose off line and copy messages into email.
  • Students will gain an understanding of the influencing factors in their keypals lives such as: housing, leisure time activities, school requirements, yearly calendars, weekly schedules, favorite (least favorite) school subject or lunch menu, and common play areas.
  • Students will inquire regarding the families of their keypals including: size, age and gender distribution, occupations.
  • Students will discover what occupation their key pal intends to pursue and the requirements in that location for such an occupation.
  • Students will define their own system of local, state, and federal governments while inquiring the same of their keypals.
  • Students will compare commonly used modes of transportation utilized by their keypals to arrive at all their activities. Students will compare these with their own.
  • Students will determine on-island attractions they would take their keypal if they ever visited. Students will ask their keypals to identify similar sites near their home.
  • Students will determine the distance from their house to the ocean. Students will acquire similar information from their keypals.

    Materials:

  1. email addresses of keypals
  2. computer sign up schedule
  3. pencils
  4. paper
  5. outline maps of Oahu, Great Britain, Ireland (clean copies)
  6. data disks
  7. postcards to mail to keypals (optional)
  8. 12" x 18" white paper to create classroom displays
