Personal Dictionaries

Students use the Address Book to make a "Personal Dictionary" of vocabulary words or new words they are learning. I found this idea in Handhelds in Schools Chapter 2 lesson plans for handhelds from the University of Nebraska.

  1. Teacher provides a list or students create a list of unfamiliar words from literature or content text.
  2. Students open Address Book in handheld computer and open a new entry.
  3. Under "Last Name" students enter the vocabulary word.
  4. Under "Title" students enter the part of speech.
  5. Under "Company" students enter definition.
  6. Under "Work" students enter an original sentence that includes the word. If more than one student uses the same Palm I would ask students to place their names at the end of the sentence.
  7. Optional: Students can edit categories and create a category for each content area or create a category for their own names.
