Gísli Tryggvi Tells About Icelandic Money

Dear Patti and second graders,

thank you for sending these math examples. Our school doesn't start until Thursday after X-mas hollidays.

Here is our money:

5000 = fimm þúsund krónur = fimm þúsund kall 2000 = tvö þúsund krónur = tvö þúsund kall 1000 = eitt þúsund krónur = eitt þúsund kall 500 = fimm hundruð krónur = fimmhundruð kall 100 = hundrað krónur = hundrað kall 50 = fimmtíu krónur = fimmtíu kall 10 = tíu krónur = tíkall 5 = fimm krónur = fimmkall 1 = ein króna

In 1 króna is 100 aurar we have:

50 = fimmtíu aurar
10 = tíu aurar
5 = fimm aurar

How can you make hundrað krónur?

(please note you call them kalla when talking about them like following, karl or kall means a man and kallar men in other means.)

You can:

100 = One fimmtíu kall and 3 tíkalla and 3 fimmkalla, and 5 ein króna coins.
100 = Two fimmtíu kalla
100 = Ten tíkalla
100 = Twenty fimmkalla
100 = One hundred krónur (króna = single, krónur = many)
100 = One fimmtíu kall and 5 tíkalla

I calculated all the examples your students sent to me and all of them where right. You have very good students.

Bless
Gísli Tryggvi Gíslason
