The Best Present
Dear Miss Liz and Mr. Bob,

We are writing about the best present we ever received. Do you have a best present, too? Please tell us about it. We are learning "main idea" and "details" in our writing lessons. Can you find our main ideas and details? When you write back to us we will look for your main ideas and details, too.

Happy Holidays!

Dear 2nd and 3rd graders,

When I was in school we didn't do "main idea" and "details". In those days we had to do nouns (name words) and verbs (work words) instead. I didn't do "main idea" and "details" until last year when I had to study Dutch. I'm not sure if I really got the hang of it. Will you tell me if I get it wrong?!

Here goes!

Dominique's main idea is a gokart. The details are when she got it, what it looks like and how fast it goes.

Katie's main idea was a bike. The details are that she got it from Santa, she also got other presents and so Christmas was fun.

Sarah's main idea is a dollhouse. The details are who gave it to her, when she got it and how everybody felt.

Billy's main idea is a gokart. The details are when he got it and that you can get trophies for driving it.

Kylene's main idea is a swimming pool. The details are when she got it and what she likes to do in it.

Ronshaya's main idea was a new bedroom. The details are other nice things that have happened to her.

Tommy's main idea is a car. The details are that he is going to get another nice present this year.

Staphanie's main ideas are skates and a dog. The details are that the skates are fun and it's nice to feed the dog.

Phillip's main idea is a very big present. The details are how big the present was, what was inside it and what else he got.

Chris' main idea is a bike. The details are that he got it from his dad and that he would like a new blue and red bike this year.

My best present was a cat. We got her for our wedding anniversary. She has white fur and blue eyes. She is called Snowy and she is very cute.

your friend,
Liz (and Snowy)

Dear Liz,

Your main idea was the cat and I like the cat and I like the cat name and the cats eyes of the cat and I like the cat.

Dear Liz,

The main idea is you have a cat. Your cat has white fur and blue eyes. These are details. How old is your cat?

Your friend,
Dominique

The students circled the "main idea" and underlined the "details" in the message from Liz. Then they typed their letters back to her.

From Mr. Bob in the UK:

Hi,

I think the best present I received was a bicycle, because then I could ride around and visit so many places I might not have seen. Our countryside where I live is very pretty, with farms, woods, moors, hills and valleys. It was hard work going up some of the hills, (we didn't have mountain bikes then), but great going down them. There wasn't so much traffic on the roads then either, so it was much safer.

Happy Christmas to you too.
Bob

Hi Dominique,

Red go-carts are the best. They always seem to go faster don't they? I never had a go-cart, but I bet it's a lot of fun. Do you have a special place to go with it? With crash barriers?

Your friend,
Bob

Hi Katie,

I remember my bike. It was a long time ago, and not many gears. It was also very heavy, and blue. I went all over with it. I learnt how to mend punctures, and oil the bits which needed oiling. It was great fun.

Your friend,
Bob

Hi Sarah,

My sister had a dollhouse. It was made of wood, and opened up at the back. There was furnisher in all the rooms, beds, chairs, and tables. The doors inside opened, and the windows had curtains.

Your friend,
Bob

Hi Billy,

A lot of people I have written to like gocarts. Is there a special place nearby where you go to race it? I never had one, but it looks like a lot of fun. I'm not surprised it was your best present ever.

Your friend,
Bob

Hello Kylene,

Wow! That's some present. I never had a swimming pool, still don't. Mind you, I can't swim, so it doesn't matter. I tried once, but didn't like getting water in my eyes, the stuff they put in pools made my eyes sting. Do you put that stuff in your pool? Have you got a diving board yet?

Your friend,
Bob

Hello Ronshaya,

That's a very nice thought Ronshaya. Your teacher is often your best friend because he or she wants the best for you. To pass onto all the things he/she has learnt. I loved going to school because I loved to learn new things. Sometimes it was hard, but that made it all the more interesting and when I learnt it, I felt great.

Your friend,
Bob

Hello Tommy,

A car, that's a big present. CD's are good too. What sort of music will you play on it? I like some of the older stuff best, 60's music. What sort of car did you get?

Your friend,
Bob

Hello Stephanie,

Tell me what breed of dog have you got. I like dogs. I have always had a dog. Now I have two, a golden retriever called Rebel, and a new puppy. The puppy is a St. Bernard, just old enough to leave her mom. What sort of skates have you got, roller skates or ice skates. I had some roller skates, and went ice skating.

Your friend,
Bob

Hello Phillip,

I like your present. I have a dog called Rebel, and just got a new puppy. The puppy is a St. Bernard. Did you ever see the movie with the St. Bernard?, I can't remember the name at the moment, but it was a BIG dog. The puppy is tiny now, but she has big feet, and will grow very big. You have a lot of CD's, what sort of music do you like? I like 60's music. Bet you don't like the same.

Your friend,
Bob

Hello Chris,

Like me Chris, that was my best present too. Mine was blue. Not a mountain bike or anything, they weren't around then. I wish it was, we have a lot of steep hills around where I live. I had to get off and push it up the hills, and go whizzing down the other side.

Your friend,
Bob
