Curriculum Connection: elements of poetry
Materials Needed:
Computer lab or classroom computer with internet access, writing folder, poetry type schedule from website, evaluation rubric for type of poetry, peer revision folder, binders for storage of downloaded poetry to share in writing center
Classroom Collaboration:

Online Collaboration:
Sharing of individually created student poems uploaded in a class folder to other members of the website.
Lesson:
- Initial classroom lesson on the specific type of poetry being focused on for the month. (Choices are outlined on the website by dates when they will be featured. )
Examples: Emotion poems, Limericks, Diamonte, Acrostics, Haiku, etc.
- Students individually compose a poem and then meet with a pre-assigned classroom peer for revisions and editing.
- Students type their polished poem into a Word document that they save in a designated class folder on the “S” drive.
- The teacher emails this folder to the website as an attachment during the time frame indicated for that type of poem.
- The website teacher creates an anthology of the poems from participating schools and sends this back to the teacher as a file attachment.
- Students are able to read the poems created by other students around the world .
- Poetry types change every four months.
Evaluation:
Completed poem graded with a poetry rubric created for the elements of each specific type of poem.
