Mr. D's Money Machine

Hi, gang:

I have just received a special "Money Machine" - I'm worried though, because I put in a dollar bill and it gave me back 7 coins that exactly equaled the dollar. What were the coins?

You Confused KeyPal,
Mr. D

Dear Mr. D.,

Hello!! How are you? We are fine. This is Stephanie and Caitlin. We got your letter about the money. Before we even start, let us tell you I'm not the best person to talk to when it comes to math. Welp, here it goes:

(#1.) 3 QUARTERS, 3 NICKELS, AND 1 DIME.
(#2). 2 QUATERS AND 5 DIMES.
(#3.) 1 FIFTY CENT PIECE, 2 NICKELS, AND 4 DIMES.
(#4.) 1 QUARTER, 1 FIFTY CENT PIECE, AND 5 NICKELS.

All we can think of!!

Your mixed up Key-Pals,
Stephanie and Caitlin

P.S. How many ways are there for real?

Jan. 15, 1997 Dear Mr. D.,

So, far, I have found four ways to get a dollar using seven coins.

1.) One Fifty cent piece, Four dimes and two nickels.
2.) 3 quarters, 1 dime, and 3 nickels.
3.) 2 quarters and five dimes.
4.) 1 50, 1 quarter, and 5 nickels.

You Pal Kim.

Dear Mr. D

I found one way 2 quarters 5 dimes. 1 50 cent piece 4 dimes 2 nickels. That is all I am going to say. Why because it added up to be a dollar and it was 7 coins.

Your FRIEND,
Paul
