Letters to Peggy, Candice, Lucas and William

Letters to Peggy, Candice, Lucas and William

From Maya in North Carolina

In one of my first letters to Maya I told her that our town is too big for one state. I gave her some 'homework' and asked her to tell us the two states where Delmar is located. She got an A+! ...then.... ;-) she gave *us* homework which the summer school kids got right into.

In the photo above Peggy is feeling the cornstarch packaging material dissolve in water. Maya's mom packed the shells which she sent to Peggy in a bed of these small pieces which she thought Peggy would enjoy feeling as they disappeared in the water. Peggy asked what color her fingers were after they dissolved. She giggled as they seemed to melt into the water. This was fun!

As always, I signed my e-mail as 'Patti' and Maya's mom added a cute note in her reply.

Dear Ms. Patti, ( mom's note: You're in the
                  south now!)

Thank-you for writing me a letter *grin*.
I've been dying for a keypal. This is my
answer to the homework; Delaware & Maryland.
And now here is your homework for tonight.
Try to find out the scientific name of a
fiddler crab. After you do that name six
kinds of whales. I live in Beaufort, NC.
We have fiddler crabs and whales.
I am not short for my age. I am very tired
*yawn*. Good-bye
                        Warm hugs
                                Maya

(Mom's note 2: Do to a hectic schedule Maya dictated this to me in the car
at some point. I agreed to type just this once! She's asleep. Thank-you
for your wonderful letter. Maya was really touched as was I. warm hugs,
Susan)

(Hi Candace, I am Maya's mom, Susan. Maya did not have time to get to a
computer today but she did write this letter for me to type. Next time she
will do it all!! Have a good time in summer school. I think Maya would

Friday evening July 7
Dear Peggy,

Thank- *YOU* for the letter. One of my grandmothers (Grammy) lives close to
my house. The other one lives far away in Hickory, NC. I spend the night
with both of them. I watch TV, play with their cats, and sometimes play
with my cousins at Grammy's house. In Hickory at my Grandma's house I play
a little basketball video game, play with my sister, watch hummingbirds, and
eat, eat, eat!
I have been very scared when hurricanes are here at the coast. During
hurricanes we stay in the house. We pull in the outside chairs and
birdfeeders to make sure that they don't get blown away. We take down our
outside pelican flag. The last hurricane that came by (last year) brought
water all of the way up to our house.
Thunder is the sound of electric lightning so I do not think it is electric.
Somebody made up the name "Crystal coast" to help sell land and hotel rooms
on our beaches. The water can be crystal clear. I do not know how Carrot
Island got its name.
Tell me more about Fruitland.
In the saltmarsh in my front yard we have blue crabs, fish, and shrimp. We
also have clams, mussels, and oysters. It has lots of pointy green grass
that is almost as tall as me. (Salt meadow cord grass)
I love to eat chicken.
Dolphins look like fish with long noses. They are grey and smooth. They
are mammals which means they have live babies and feed them mother's milk.
Unlike fish they have to come up to the surface to breathe air. They
sometimes leap up into the air and come down with a big SPLASH!
Our museum has lots of sea stuff. There is a big golden divers suit. (Maya
will go to the museum next week to refresh her memory of what is in there.)
I will send you lots of letters.
Well sorry, gotta go
Your friend, Maya :.)

Dear Peggy,

Hi!
I like to swim a lot, too. I usually swim in the ocean.
My favorite color is black. Just because I like it.
[From Maya's Dad: Maya isn't feeling good today. She has a sore throat,
and she just told me that her ears hurt and she has a headache ;-( ]
I don't like the sound of thunder either. It's SO loud, and when it happens
all of a sudden it scares me! <:-o
It must be exciting to be an aunt!
I like to count pennies, too.
I'll write you another letter tomorrow.
Your Friend,
Maya :)
