Maryland Then and Now

Leslie

Maryland has changed over the years. A lot of it is the way people act. For an example, around the 1700's at balls or dances the men would talk to the ladies then ask if they wanted to dance. The man would say, "Miss Dyson, pray allow me the honor of this dance."

Now the man or young man will just walk up to the lady or young lady and ask if she would like to dance. Also, at dances back then you did not dance in partners! Not until the 1800's when the waltz was introduced did you dance together!

Back then if a man wanted a young lady to marry him he would have to ask the lady's father. The young man told the father what a good husband he would be and how much money he had or would have. If the father liked him then he gave his daughter, and his land, money or belongings as dowry. Now the man asks the woman to marry him. It really doesn't matter if the father cares or not.

Letters of the 1600's always began with a compliment and ended with 'best wishes.'

People would write wills and give away everything including land, homes, horses, cattle, everything! I guess that is still one thing that is the same now.

When settlers came by in the 1600's the colonists would give them shelter and food. That is something else that is different now. Most people do not let anyone come into their homes because sometimes it is just too dangerous.

I guess all this ends up to be the manners of Maryland. Back in the 1600's they had better manners than now.
