The Delmar kids stand near their 'rainforest' on the wall.

Friends,

This card arrived for us last week from the "Sumatran Santa's Elves" and we want to share it with you... ;-)

Happy Holidays and warm hugs,
Patti

Dear People,

Hi and merry Christmas! This is a Christmas card from us to you from about as far as you can get, Indonesia. I heard your school is on the border of two states. That's pretty awesome. I've always wanted to stand half in one state or country and half in another. Oh well, I suppose that since you can do that it doesn't seem as great. So, you're fifth and sixth graders? There's one sixth grader in our school and three fifth graders. The sixth grader is Pat and he's in our class. My sister is one of the fifth graders. Anyway, you're probably not interested in that. I have absolutely no idea what you're interested in besides the Internet. I think the Interent's okay, but I really don't know much about it. I only started using it this year. Oh well.

. ... ..... ....... ......... ... ...

That is a Christmas tree. I am obviously not artistically inclined. I guess I could have used stars to draw it. Oh well. Once again merry Christmas, have a happy New Year and um, bye.

Bye again,
Sumatran Santa's Elves

Dear Samatran Santa's Elves,

Hi, my name is Ashley. I have never really thought about having one foot on one state and having the other foot on another state. I don't know if I have ever had one foot on one side and one foot on the other. Even though I live on the state line. I live right on the state line that separates Maryland and Delaware. Oh, I forgot to tell you, I am a 5th grader. What is you sister's name? I can draw a Christmas tree too. SEE....

Dear Nick,

It's Alison here, and I got your letter you sent to the world and I think it's pretty interesting. The first thing I liked was the part where you talked about how to take care of yourself and not get leeches. I probably will use your information in the future when I go hiking in the woods with my friends or family. I really enjoyed listening to your story and so will other people, I think.

Since you told us about yourself I'll tell some things about me. My name is Alison as you read up in the top, I like to hang out with my friends and am a great cheerlearder I got M V P's the first two years I've been on the team this will be my third year to be on the team, but I am moving up because I am 11 years old and can not stay in Pee Wee's {the little kids group}. I think that I will have a great success in cheerleadering life Well sorry to cut you short, BYE.

Your friend,
Alison

Dear Nick,

Hi! How are you? I am fine. My name is Kelly. I read your story. I liked it. I have never had a leech on me before. I don't plan on wanting one on me. Have you ever had a leech on you before? If you have how does it feel? From what I hear it sounds like it hurts. Does it? When I read the story the best part was when I heard about Mr.Cason saved that girl. What was your most interesting part? I told my dad and mom about the story. They were shocked. My mom did not beleive me at first, But when I got done telling her she believed me then.

Since you told me about yourself. I will tell you somthings about me. I am 12 years old. I have 3 brothers and one step sister.

Your friend,
Kelly

Dear Bill McDonald, Donald C., and world,

Hi! This is Karen Sawyer. I am 14 and in 9th grade at Dhahran School, Saudi Arabia. I have blonde hair and blue eyes and like to play basketball, swim, run, play piano, play flute, and make pottery. I am originally from Houston, Texas until I moved to Saudi Arabia about four years ago. I live here because my dad works for the oil company Saudi Aramco. We get to travel a lot here, and yes, I am going to Sumatra, Indonesia in April '97. We are going to trek through the rain forest and go white water rafting. We will also see orangutans and many of the Sumatran people. Right now our trekking group is getting packed and I ordered hiking boots from LL Bean. I need to get hiking pants and equipment and I've got a cool backpack. We have to take Malaria and maybe Typhoid pills, cause, over in Sumatra the local water and mosquitoes could be bad. We are going to ask people in Sumatra how we can save the rain forest and the orangutan. Any ideas? Oh, yeah. We are adopting an orangutan and need a name. Please tell me any good names for a baby orangutan. We could use it!! Orangutans are endangered, so I am excited to actually see them!

DEAR TREKKIE FRIENDS AND OTHER VIRTUAL TREKKIES,

HELLO! MY NAME IS KATRINA. OTHERWISE KNOWN AS TINX. I AM 14. I'M GOING ON THE TRIP TO SUMATRA. I AM REALLY EXCITED. I REALLY LIKE DANCE AND SOCCER. BUT OF COURSE, SCHOOL TAKES UP MOST OF MY TIME. IF YOU HAVE ANY QUESTIONS, PLEASE WRITE ME BACK!

RIGHT NOW WE ALL JUST PREPARING TO GO. I REALLY NEED TO GET GOING. I'M REALLY BUSY WITH SCHOOL AND STUFF. I NEED TO GET ALL OF MY SHOTS FOR TYPHOID AND MALARIA, ETC. I'M ORDERING MY HIKING BOOTS FROM L.L.BEAN. I REALLY NEED TO BUY SOME PANTS TOO. WHEN WE GO TO THE RAIN FOREST ITS GOING TO BE REALLY WET, SO I GUESS I'M JUST GOING TO LIVE IN MY BATHING SUIT. OF COURSE LIVING IN SAUDI ARABIA WE ARE DEFIANTLY NOT USED TO THE RAIN.

I NEED HELP PACKING. IF YOU GUYS HAVE ANY IDEAS ABOUT WHAT I NEED TO PACK, HELP IS WELCOME. THE PEOPLE WHO WENT LAST YEAR SAID IT WAS A BLAST. I HOPE WE'RE GOING TO HAVE AS MUCH FUN. A LOT OF THE PEOPLE GOING THIS YEAR I KNOW, SO I GUESS IT WILL BE. I'M REALLY EXCITED EVEN THOUGH IT'S TWO MONTHS AWAY. BUT I KNOW THAT AS SOON AS IT GETS CLOSE TO LEAVE, I'M GOING TO HAVE A SPAZ AND ITS GOING TO BE ONE BIG RUSH.

WHEN WE GO, WE'RE GOING TO STOP AND GIVE INTERVIEWS TO A VARIETY OF PEOPLE, AND IF THEY DON'T SPEAK ENGLISH, WE HAVE A TRANSLATOR. SO IF YOU WANT US TO ASK ANYTHING, OR INTERVIEW ANYONE IN PARTICULAR, WRITE ME BACK. I HOPE WE TAKE A DIGITAL CAMERA WE CAN SEND IT OUT FOR ALL YOU VIRTUAL TREKKIES TO DOWNLOAD AT HOME.

IF ANYONE OUT THERE JUST WANTS TO KNOW MORE ABOUT US OR ANYTHING ELSE ABOUT OUR TRIP, WRITE US BACK. BE SURE TO READ ANY OTHER POSTINGS ON KIDPROJ.

CIAO,
KATRINAJ

Dear Trekkie buds,

Hello! I am a 15 year old girl going on the Sumatra trip. My name is Lavanya Balasubramanian. I like sports, music, and all that great stuff. I am really excited to go to Sumatra, it's going to rock the planet! I started ordering all the stuff I need for the trip, like hiking boots and waterproof pants and stuff. I went on a fairly similar trip to Kenya last year, so I kinda know what kind of stuff I need for the trip. It's going to be really fun because a lot of my friends are going on the trip. Also, the people that went last year said that it was really great. Well, I can't say that I know a whole lot on the subject yet, but if you have any questions about Sumatra that you think I could answer, or have any advice for me, don't hesitate to write me. Oh yeah, don't forget to read all the others messages posted on Kidlink. Hope to hear from you soon...

*Lavanya*

Trekkie followers:

I'm going to Sumatra in April. I can't wait. It is going to kick. We have to report on it, but that doesn't matter. It will be good to tell other people about the trip. A lot of my friends are going as well. Oh yeah, I'm 14 and my name is Natalie. I went on vacation in December and I got all of my hiking stuff. A new backpack and hiking boots. Sumatra is a really good experience and it is going to be so fun cause I get to save save save that rainforest. If anyone have any questions you can ask them and I"ll try to answer.

Natalie

Hi Trekkie followers, Stefan Hatfield here. I am really excited about the trip. I've ordered a few stuff from Lands End and L.L. Bean. Since we live halfway around the world it takes a while for the packages to get here. I like to camp and hike. I'm looking forward to hiking up and into the volcano. What would you take if you were me? If you have any questions, go ahead and ask.

Sincerely,
Stefan Hatfield

Dear Karen,

Hi this is Donald C. again. What are you planning to do when you get to the rainforest? Do you know what it may look like? Oh!!!! thank you for the letter to me . So you're 14 years old. I like swimming too and basketball. I hope you enjoyed my letter that I wrote. You can put up a sign saying PUT OUT YOUR CAMP FIRES WHEN YOU'RE DONE!! And it will help some . I hope this helps save the rainforest and the orangutan.
