E-mail Exchanges Among the Kids

The Delmar kids are making a "rainforest" in their KIDLINK lab area of the Media Center. Look at the trees, vines and banner across the top of the windows. It says, "Virtual Sumatra."

Dear Natalie,

My name is Brad I am 10 years old. I wonder what Kenya looks like. I like to look at wildlife. It is so much fun to look at. I think forests shouldn't be cut down. If people keep on cutting down trees animals won't have any place to live. I would like to see more trees planted than cut down. I enjoy playing baskeball not softball sorry we don't have much in common.

Your Pal,
Brad

Dear Natalie,

You're so lucky. I wish I can fly in an airplane in a class trip. I like wildlife too.

By the way my name is Hanvi, but you can me vi(v). I would love to visit Arabia one day. I like to read. My mom would yell at me if I read for too long because she thinks it's bad for your eyes. That's all for now.

Sincerely,
Hanvi

Dear Karen,

How are you?? I am fine. My name is Stephanie. I am 11 and in the 6th grade in Elementary School. I was born in Baltimore on August 1,1985. I like swimming, coloring, drawing, music, and other things. I play the flute in our sixth grade band at our school. Our school name is Delmar Elementary School which, well, kind of makes sense since it is in Delmar. I have lived in Delmar for about 3 years. The rest of my life I have spent in Baltimore where I was born. People tell me a lot that I have an accent even though I don't think that I do. Even one of my best friends told me that. What grades does your school go to Ours go to 6th and starts at Kindergarten.

You are lucky to go to the rainforest. What will you do there? How long will it take you to get there? Well, I have got to go now,so bye!

Your friend,
Stephanie

Hey Noa and Schlomzion!

Wow! How neat! Getting you guy's response was so sweet! The total highlight of my day! I just think its so neat -- I mean getting a letter from people who live in a country I'm not even allowed to go into, that I don't even know -- that's just slick. I guess I'm so excited over this cause I'm not even hooked up to the local internet, and this is my first experience with Cyber Space. So anyway, like I said before, this is totally awesome.

Hey, that's totally cool how you guys go to an environmental school. The school that I go to is anything but environmental. Oh sure they say something about saving the earth and the rain forest and whatnot, but you wouldn't know by the amount of paper they waste. We've probably got acres of trees down here. But this is getting depressing! Lets move on to happier subjects.

I guess I'll tell you about me, or a little bit about me. Life here is a chore and bore and I only get a few snatches of fun every now and then. Usually it is when I'm reading and excellent book, or having a good laugh with my friends. I would say shopping but the mall here a really pathetic and I never have time anyway since ninth grade started. Sleeping, though, is my favorite past time and I think its because I never get to do it much.

I'm into alternative music. I can't name one particular group or person that I'm like the best. Just general alternative.

Hey, ( how many times have I started a paragraph like that? A zillion? ) you guys stay cool and write back.

Patricia Chen

Dear Natalie Ladd,

My name is John I am 11 years old. I think it is kind of interesting also. I have some questions for you. Here they are:

1.Do you know what the maximum weight of an Orangutan can be?
2.How fast can an Orangutan go?
3.What season do they mate?
4.What season do they have babies?
5.How many babies could they have?
Last one.
6. Do you have a computer at your house?
Well gotta go. BYE BYE!

Your New Key Pal,
John

Dear Karen,

Dear Georgia Ann Ritcher,

My name is Stephanie. I am in the sixth grade. I am 11 years old. I have many hobbies such as swimming, collecting things, driving my dad's boat, gardening, playing softball, playing basketball, shopping. What are your hobbies?

My favorite holiday is Christmas. I like Christmas because you get to see all of your family at once, you get to see the expression on the other people's face when they open the present that you bought for them, and you get to open all of your presents on Christmas morning. When you are done opening the presents that are under the Christmas tree, you get to open the presents that are in your stocking. At my house they are on the laundry room door. At other peoples' house's they are over the fireplace. We do not have a fireplace though. That is why we have them on the laundry room door. This is what I got people this year:

Dad-candy
Jason(brother)-Coke Bear mugs
Mom-Wombat(rake)
Pretty Girl(dog)-treats
Melissa- Bugs Bunny hat
Caitlin- 6 colors of strange nail polish, Minnie Mouse socks, Minnie Mouse Christmas tree ornament, shoelace charms, and something to put in the window that says "We'll be best friends until forever."

What do you have to do to get ready for your trip to Sumatra? Are you excited about going?

Gotta Go,
Stephanie

Please write back!!!

Dear Elanora Students,

My name is Julia N. I'm twelve and am one of the many students going on the Sumatra trip. I can't wait to go to Sumatra. I've traveled around the world to many countries such as the Philippines, London, Amsterdam, New Zealand, all around America, and even to Australia. In the future my family and I plan to visit Egypt and Kenya. These places were great, but I've never really had a chance to explore a rainforest. That is one reason I picked this trip. The rainforest might not be here long and I want to be able to see one before they disappear. I am very excited that we get to share our experience with you and hope you will enjoy it as much as we will.

I've never really been away from my parents more than a few days now that I think about it. I'm sure I'll be fine though. Also I've never had much camping or hiking experience, except the camp outs we had for Girl Scouts at near by jebels. I love animals, but if I wake up with a snake in my bed I don't think I'll be too happy. Who would? I'm looking forward to a trip I think will be fun and educational and I hope you find it just as interesting. Sincerely,
Julia

Dear Heather,

I'm fine, thank you. I like pizza and popcorn too, but only when I'm watching movies or something. I don't really have a favorite food. I like trying new things though. My favorite color would have to be purple or burgundy. I've played the violin since I was in kindergarten and last year picked up the baritone saxophone. When I'm not doing homework I like to hang out with friends, listen to music, or read magazines. I was in softball this season and our team, the Bandits, came in third place.

I've been in softball since third grade. We don't have cheerleading squads over here, just dance and stuff. When we go on our trip we'll hike and camp in the Lesuer National Park, which covers half of Sumatra, and is a rainforest, visit Orangutan centers, go rafting, tubing, shopping, and many more things. I am glad we'll be able to share our experience with you. Thank you for writing to me and I hope to hear from you soon. TTFN( ta ta for now) Sincerely,
Julia N.

Dear Sumatra Students,

This is Stephen and I'm writing to say hello! Firstly, I'm surprised there are even N.American kids in Sumatra. I guess you were thinking the same thing when you heard about us "Americans" in Saudi Arabia. It looks like the Sumatra trip is going to turn out to be extremely wet, what a difference from Arabia! I'm dying for it to rain, the heat gets annoying...especially when it hits 120 degrees. I feel kind of sorry for you, only 7 kids. There are a lot more kids here.

Are all of you going to boarding school in a few years? Or is there a highschool in Sumatra? One of my friends used to live in Indonesia, I'm going to ask him about it when he gets back from boarding school. I'm planning on going to Switzerland for school next year. Is there good scuba diving in Indonesia? Scuba diving here is great, I'm hoping to go to the Red Sea sometime this year. I enjoyed your writings about your excursion into the forest, I wish I could write you something as interesting without it being the Gulf War.
Sincerely,
Stephen

P.S. How often do you back to the States, or vacation?
