Studying earthquakes and Volcanoes

Mrs. Barrett's Class at Snow Hill

Dave and son, Zac, posed for my camera before Dave returned to McMurdo in January.

Dear Mr. Hess:

Hello, this is Shawn, of course, you probably know I'm in the 6th grade. How bad was the worst earthquake that ever happened there? Also, I want to know have you ever seen the volcano erupt?

Sincerely,
Shawn

Dear Mr. Hess:

Hi! My name is Melissa and I'm in the sixth grade. I am eleven years old. The food that you get that's so old, does it taste very good? Are the crackers stale? Or is the soda flat? What kind of food do you eat down there? Has anyone ever fallen into a snow crevass? I think it would be very neat to go there. I really like animals.

Sincerely,
Melissa

PS. How's the weather down there?

Dear Mr. Hess:

Hi! You remember me I'm Jennifer I used to come over to play with Zach. I have a question? What is a whiteout? And what does it do to you?

Sincerely,
Jennifer

Dear Mr. Hess,

Hi, my name is Erica, I am 11 years old. Do you like living in Antartica? Mrs. Barrett said that they have earthquakes there, but how often do they happen? How do you like 24 hours of sunlight. I think it would be pretty cool. Well you probably have some thing important to do.

Sincerely,
Erica

Dear Mr. Hess:

Hi my name is Heather and I'm in the sixth grade as you probably know already. Have you "discovered" any other places besides "Scott's Hut"? Has any of your friends fallen into a crevass yet? Have you had any fresh food lately? What is snowblindness? We have just finished doing our science projects. Have you gotten frostbit yet? Does your coffee freeze solid or haven't you had any lately? What is the hydroponic greenhouse like? It's really cold down here. We just got our report cards on February 9th. Has your beard ever frozen solid or even just a little?

Love,
Heather

Dear Mr. Hess;

Has anybody or anything fallen into a crevass. What do you sleep in at the base? Hi. My name is Lyle and I'm friends with Zach have you gotten frostbite. I know it may sound rude but has your beard ever frozen also what do you do for fun down there?

Lyle

Dear Mr. Hess:

Hi! My name is Kimberly. I think its very brave of you to go to Antartica. I think that because the weather is so harsh, and you have to stay away from your family for so long. We're getting ready to study earthquakes and volcanoes in science. We should be able to go through the chapter pretty quickly because we've studied them so many times in the past. What is it like living 5 miles from a volcano? Do you worry about lava coming to your camp? Especially if it erupted six times a day. (*I think she confused this with the number of earthquakes a day*mlb). How long would it take for something like a piece of gum to decompose? What is the highest temperature in Antarctica since you've been down there? Do you every worry about falling in crevasses? I would be. That would probably be the thing that I'd be most worried about. I saw on TV once where there was a car found in a crevass in Antarctica.

Sincerely,
Kim

Dear Mr. Hess: My name is Gretchen. We are studying about Earthquakes and Volcanoes in Science. Has Mount Erebus erupted since you've been there? Have you ever fallen in an ice crevass? Do you eat the out-of-date food? What animals have you seen in Antarctica? Do you take a bath there? That would be awful if you coldn't take a bath!! How long do you have to stay there? When you had your survival course did you stay in an igloo? I'll bet that was weird if you did. Do you have like a heater or something so food won't freeze? What do you eat down there? Has anybody been blinded from the snow yet? I can't sleep in daylight cause its too bright. Is it easy for you to go to sleep? Thank you!!

Sincerely,
Gretchen

Dear Mr. Hess

My name is Patrick, I think what you are doing in Antartica is really great and I would like to ask you a few questions about yourself and your work. What is snowblindness and have you ever gotten it? Do you like living in Antartica and what do you do there? Finally how can you stay away from your family for months on end? Please answer my questions. Thanks a lot.

Sincerely,
Patrick

Dear Mr. Hess,

Hi, my name is Rachel. I am in 6th grade. I am tall, have brown hair and brown eyes. That is enough about me. What about you? What do you do when you are down in Antarctica? Do they have many earthquakes? Is there any holes in the ice? Does any one you know ever fell in the holes of ice? If they hav holes of ice? What do you wear down there? I mean like heavy jackets and heavy pants. How many years have you been a scientist?

Sincerely,
Rachel
