Liz writes from Holland...

Patti,

Here's a little story about Rita's name.

During the War, when Holland was invaded by the Nazis, the old Queen, Juliana, took her little daughters to Canada for safety. The oldest daughter, as we know, later became Queen Beatrix. One of the younger daughters was called Margriet, which is the Dutch form of Margarita.

Well, things got pretty horrible for the Dutch people back home. I'm sure we've all seen war films and know about what the Nazis did. Dutch people are very proud and they hated their country being occupied by the enemy. Many brave people belonged to the Resistance (a sort of underground army) and did all they could to fight the Nazis.

But there was one thing that everybody could do. Whenever something really bad happened, they would go to where it had happened and put flowers on the ground. The flowers they used were those big white daisies with yellow centres - they are called Margriet in Dutch (and Marguerites in English).

To the Dutch people these flowers symbolised Princess Margriet and meant "one day the Nazis will get out of our country and we will have our Queen and the little princesses back again".

Liz

P.S. The book Rita refers to is called "The Master and Margarita" in English. As I recall, it's very good.

This URL has all sorts of reading lists, but says "The Master & Margarita" is for upper school and adults.
