Why People Wanted to Leave England

Ashley

In the early 1600's there were many people who were finding out that it was getting hard to live in England. There were not nearly enough jobs for people to have and families were having to live in small homes with another family. The weather had been very bad and the farmers couldn't grow grain. They turned their land into pastures for sheep. This caused a bad food shortage and the rich and the poor didn't have very much food. The rich had the most food anyway. Many of the people went into the village to seek a better way to live.

Many of the people decided to go to the New World. If the poor people wanted to go without paying they would have to go as an Indentured servant. When they go as an indentured servant they would have to be a servant for seven years. The rich people would rather pay for going over than having to be a servant for seven years.
