In the working world an
employee rarely encounters problems which distinctly fall into a specific
subject area of his or her education. As a result of this, the employee
must utilize a combination of learned skills to solve problems. To help
improve student achievement in the work force many schools are focusing on
problem based learning which integrates curriculum. At Aiea High School
the math and science classes are using Hydroponics to provide a real-life
connection between disciplines.
How: Students in both classes
collect a variety of data by using a variety of technical instruments to
collect pH data, water quality data(Total Dissolved Solutes) and growth
rates on a daily basis in order to determine the optimal growing
conditions for Hydroponic lettuce varieties. The math students analyze
the data on a statistical basis and share their conclusions with the
science students via e-mail. Through this collaboration the necessary
adjustments are determined to maintain the "ideal growing conditions."
Hawaii State Performance Standards
Students will:
- Use inductive and/or deductive
reasoning to solve problems.
- Interpret and inferences from statistical data and support them with
valid arguments.
- Represent and analyze relationships usings tables and graphs.
- Demonstrate a need to collect evidence with integrity and great
diligence.
- Demonstrate a need to collect as much data as possible before drawing
conclusions.
- Demonstrate an understanding and appreciation of scientific
explanations and conclusions based on logic, valid observations and
evidence.
