Dear Maya,
My name is Peggy and I am 13 years old. I like staying at Christine's house.
She is my mommy. I have been there a long time. I am in summer school right
now and this morning I was scared. I cried because I didn't know where I was
going. It's a new place for me and I have never been here before.
Now I am not crying anymore because I saw Miss Faith in the cafeteria when we
had breakfast. I also found Mrs. Weeg here and she was at my school. I found
Mrs. Conway and she is nice.
We swim in the swimming pool at home but we didn't yesterday because it was
thundering and lightning. Do you get storms where you live? Do you ever get
hurricanes where you live? Tell me about where you live. I have never been
to North Carolina before.
I like to play with pennies. I stack them up and count them. I like to play
baby dolls with my friend, Heather. Heather named her baby Amy.

Dear Maya,
Thank you for the letter. Does your Grandmother live close to your house or
far away? Do you spend the night at your grandmother's house? I never spend
the night with anybody. What fun things do you do at your grandmother's
house? I sometimes go to my grandmother house. I listen to the TV there or
listen to movies. I can't see the TV but I listen.
Have you ever been afraid during a hurricane? Sometimes I am afraid when I
hear thunder but I have never seen lightning. Thunder is electric isn't it?
Why is the Crystal Coast called that name? We have stores where you can buy
ice cream too. It is called Baskin Robbins.
That is a unusual name for an island.... Carrot Island. How did it get its
name? Do you grow carrots there?
We have an island with horses too and it is called Assateague Island. Maybe
you think that is a funny name. The horses are allowed to walk around and
they get in the roads and sometimes people feed them but you have to be
careful because they could get upset and kick or bite.
We have tourists in Ocean City and they come to go to the beach. Tell us
about your saltmarsh in the front yard. What is in the marsh? Out land here
is very flat. We have no hills or mountains. We live on a peninsula and it
is flat.
Our farmers plant soybeans and corn and watermelons and beans. We have lots
of chicken farms because we have Perdue chicken plants here. Do you like to
eat chicken? I like chicken. We had it for dinner last night. We don't
have dolphins here that I know. What are dolphins?
What is in your maritime museum? Have you gone there many times?
I don't have any pets because my mommy and daddy don't like them.

Dear Maya,
It's me again, Peggy. Do you live near the beach? I like the beach because I
play with the sand and make sand castles. My sister is 16. Her name is
Francesca and she plays with me at the beach. I like to swim in the water. I
can't see the water
but it feels good. It is warm. I swim in the Ocean.
I like to eat steamed crabs. Do you cook your crabs?
What is a whale? Mrs. Weeg says you have seen whales. Are whales big? Do
they swim?
What a life jackets? When we are on a boat we have to wear one.
Mrs. Weeg is showing me the keys that have a Braille marking, I'll make some
j's and f's for you.

Do you have a boardwalk at your beach? We do. There are lots of stores on
the boardwalk. We can buy sandals and flip-flops. We can buy french fries
and hamburgers and a drink and ice cream. There are rides there too.
I can hear music at the beach. People bring radios to the beach. There is
music in the stores. I can hear people walking and talking on the boardwalk.
I can hear the seagulls flying over us. On the ocean highway I can hear horns
and cars. There are a lot of people at the beach.
I smell the french fries cooking. I can smell the salty water. The ocean is
salty. We went to church last night. We sang called 'Jesus Gives.' He gives
us his love.

My New Clothes
My mommy bought me some shorts. They are pink she said.
My mommy bought me some socks and they are pink too. I have new shirt with
designs and I can feel the designs. It feels rough like dried glue on my
shirt. There are laces and bows on the loops of dried glue. There are
sparkles on my shirt. Christine's sister gives me all kinds of clothes like
sweat pants and shirts. I have a vest.
Fourth of July is almost here. It is Tuesday. We don't have school in July
4th. It is Independence Day. There are fireworks on the 4th of July. They
are too loud for me. I can't see their pretty colors.
Tomorrow we don't have summer school. I will play toys inside. I will play
with my pennies and listen to the TV. I will eat breakfast tomorrow and then
play.
Shawnda is my friend. She is Christine's niece. She lives across the street.
She has a brother. His name is Doug.

My grandmother lives in West Virginia. I don't get to
spend much time with her.
I have a big pool in my backyard that I like to swim in.
I spend lots of time swimming in the pool. I am a good
swimmer.
I live 30 miles from the ocean. Ocean City is the name
of the town. There are a lot of fun things to do there. I
love to ride the rides. I love to hear all of the sounds in
Ocean City.
I am afraid of thunderstorms. I don't like the sound of
the thunder.
My favorite color is purple. What is your favorite
color.
My mommy is in Savannah, Georgia waiting for the baby to
be born that will be her grandchild.
My favorite thing to do is to dump and count all the
pennies that my Daddy+ gives me. He doesn't like pennies so
he gives them all to me.

I have to go work on my Math with Miss Dickerson.
