Coins in the Iset

Olya Malykh

Dear Patti,

I like very much the messages that virtual classmates wrote. Thank you also for interesting description of Nanticokes celebrations and other messages about Indian tribes. Well, now concerning my first assignments.

Our city, Ekaterinburg, was found in 1723 on the bank of Iset river. Settlers built there a coin mint. The river is very polluted now. And this year workers began cleaning the bottom of the river in the center of the city near the dam. It is the most beautiful place of our city. They stopped water on the dam and prospectors rushed to dig for old coins there. They already found not only old Russian coins of the Peter the Great's time but also Austrian coins and Polish ones!

You asked about temperature range in our region. In winter the temperature can be as low as -30F and in summer it can be as high as 100F. This year was specially surprising: the snow was falling on June 6. Yet all the summer was very hot until September 15. And it was snowing on September 16.

Soil here is fit for farming as a rule. However, you can find here unsuitable soil such as turf, marshes, stony and clay.

Greetings to all friends,
Olya

Dear Olya,

How fascinating! Can you tell us who these settlers were that came to Ekaterinburg and made the coin mint? Soon we will be discussing the settlement of Maryland. Did the settlers who came to Ekaterinburg find anyone already living in the area? Why do you think there are Austrian and Polish coins in the river? Please tell us more. Are they old coins? Can you tell if they have been in the river for a long time? I see fountains in your river. Do people throw coins in the river?

How did the river get polluted?

Have you had snow already??? *smiles* We do not see snow very often and when we do it usually melts quickly.

Warm hugs, Patti

Olya's classmates... How about some questions for Olya? Who can write back quickly and tell me the global address for Ekaterinburg? The global address is the latitude and longitude. Olya, please tell us how many hours ahead of GMT you are in Ekaterinburg. Right now we are GMT -4 but at the end of October this will change by an hour and we will once more be GMT -5.
